We understand surrendering a pet can be difficult. We encourage you to check through our resources if you are in need of financial or other assistance for your pet. If you are able to keep the animal in your home while looking for a new home, please follow the ReHome link under the Help For You tab.
If you are unable to keep your cat or dog in your home and need to surrender, please contact us by phone at (218) 281-7225. Please note we may have a wait list but we will be able to record you and your pet’s information and contact you once we have availability. We do require a surrender fee that will go towards the cost of care and medical expenses if accepted into our organization.
Scruffy Tails Humane Society knows that surrendering your pet is a very difficult decision, but sometimes - it is the only one to make. If you choose to surrender your pet, you'll be asked to complete a surrender contract. Your signature on this contract represents a permanent decision on your part. This legally binding contract gives full ownership of the animal to Scruffy Tails Humane Society. This allows us to provide veterinary care and down the road, legally adopt out the animal to a new home. Please note: We consider adoptions through our organization to be closed, meaning that we do not reveal the identities of either the surrendering or adopting parties. This ensures your privacy, as well as the privacy of the adopter, will be protected.
All surrender requests are taken over the phone. Please call us at (218) 281-7225 during our open hours and we'll ask for some information regarding the pet you need to surrender.
Our Shelter Manager will review the information and determine if we have availability and whether or not your pet is a fit for our humane society. Please note that due to limited resources, we are unable to assist in some cases and may provide alternative resources.
